The world is emptiness, the emptiness is the world(空即是色,色即是空). Wang Wei, a true buddhist, stayed in the South Mountain(南山) and practise Buddhism in his late life, this poem might be his comprehension as well as his explanation: how to applying Buddhism on painting.

Wang Wei is the top master of Music, Painting and Poetry in Tang dynasty, his masterpieces were always featured with the fusion of his three talents, with the philosophy of Zen.

It is almost impossible to decipher this very strange poem, every sentence is a paradox ,without knowing Wang Wei and his life, without knowing a bit of Zen: 空即是色, 色即是空.

王维

近听水无声。
