Chinese poem illustration:鸟鸣涧 Birds Singing Creek by Wang Wei
This poem is one of five poems Wang Wei wrote for his friend’s Cloud Creek Villa 云溪别墅 just outside of Shaoxing town 绍兴, a very old town near Hangzhou, a typical Yangtze river south area 江南.
Unlike Bai Juyi’s 白居易/忆江南, which was depicting the spring of same area , Wang Wei’s picturesque poem sounds like an illusion, a puzzle , meditation of Zen…. It shows so different in different eyes.
The first 2 sentences depict a STATIC silence, the last 2 sentences depict a DYNAMIC silence.
人闲桂花落, this status became one possible pursuit of life for Chinese intellectuals .
