元日抒怀 vs 田家元日

This video is my celebration to 2022 tiger year’s Spring Festival, by comparing two Tang poems written in new year’s day(元日), the characters and mindsets of the two poets are further revealed. Another video 元日/王安石 is also a good reference for this comparison.

It is a long and ancient tradition for Chinese that value the starting stage the most. Review to the past year and projection to the coming year in a new year’s day is the concrete form of this traditional spirit, which in turn could also be the maker and builder of this Chinese value.

Nowaday, the word 元旦 refers to new year’s day of Julian Calendar. While just before 1911, it is a synonym to 元日, the Chinese New Year. 元旦 means the first sunrise, of course it only happens in the new year’s day.

元日述怀
卢照邻

筮仕无中秩,
归耕有外臣。
人歌小岁酒,
花舞大唐春。

草色迷三径,
风光动四邻。
愿得长如此,
年年物候新。

田家元日
孟浩然

昨夜斗回北,
今朝岁起东。
我年已强仕,
无禄尚忧农

桑野就耕父,
荷锄随牧童。
田家占气候,
共说此年丰。
