Not like the other two happy songs, this poem is of sad feelings of homesick. It sounds a bit strange how could a sad song be played in a happy party, normally consist of music, dance, dining, drinking and shooting arrow game etc, while it definitely revealed the two ultimate subjects of Zhou people: wars and ancestors(国之大事, 在祀与戎).

This poem could be a typical three paragraphs poem of Shijing, the first, second and fifth paragraph consist of the three verses, and the third and fourth paragraph look like the chorus.

Chinese poem illustration: 小雅 四牡/ Xiaoya – Four Horses by Anonymous Full video also available at Bilibili: 小雅 四牡 One of the three most recited and sung poems by Zhou people(鹿鸣, 四牡,Read More…

[4691,705,558,973
1021,1237,2908,1012,1020,2341,2910,2331,2911,2868,2906,2907,2164,2909,3396,3397
post-5759","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-of-songs","category-705","category-history-2","category-973","tag-book-of-songs","tag-chinese-poetry","tag-2908","tag-1012","tag-fanmandarin","tag-homesick","tag-horse","tag-shijing","tag-war","tag-xiaoya","tag-2906","tag-2907","tag-2164","tag-2909","tag-3396","tag-3397
["GET
